One day, non-accredited course on manual handling training course teaches the best practices in manual handling to minimise the risk of accidents and injury.

For some people, moving loads may be a key part of their job. However, many employees can find themselves having to occasionally pick up and manoeuvre heavy loads in virtually any working environment, especially as a Care Workers moving individuals.  That’s why manual handling training is so important to ensure that they use the correct techniques whilst being aware of the most serious dangers.

Course Description

This course covers the following Units of Competency from  CHC33015 Certificate III Individual Support

Units of Competency

  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

First Aid is the initial care of a sick or injured person. Prompt first aid can save lives in the critical time before emergency services or medical aid arrives. It can also prevent an injury or illness from becoming worse and provide comfort and reassurance to a casualty. This short course aims to demonstrate and develop skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. Both units apply to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

The key aims of first aid:

  • Preserve life of anyone involved in incident
  • Protect any unconscious person
  • Prevent any further injury or existing injury becoming worse
  • Promote recovery of casualty

Course Requirements:

Compulsory course learning material to be completed before class commencement.

A Statement of Attainment will be issued for units completed in this course.

Unit of Competency

  • HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication

This short course is aimed at workers in the community and health sector who require a set of skills for assisting clients with administering their medication. Care workers in community, disability and nursing homes will learn the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication, supporting a client to self-administer their medication and complete medication documentation.

Course Requirements:

Students must have completed Certificate III in Individual Support and working in industry to attend this course. Workplace assessment is required*

NB: Students are required to receive their student workbook and student assessment book.  The assessment book is required to be completed prior to commencement of workshop.

* Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace unless state or territory legislated prevents this occurring with the addition of simulations and scenarios where the full range of contexts and situations have not been provided in the workplace. The following aspects of the performance evidence must have been demonstrated using simulation prior to demonstration in the workplace/with members of the general public.

  • HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
  • CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically
  • CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs
  • CHCCS015 Provide individualised support
  • CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
  • CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing
  • CHCAGE001 Facilitate the empowerment of older people
  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  • HLTINF001 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • CHCCCS025 Support relationships with carers and families
  • CHCHCS001 Provide home and community support Services

This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and residential settings who are required to provide person-centered support to people that are ageing, people with disabilities or other reasons.

Work involves using discretion and judgement as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Students will learn a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide appropriate support.

This course covers two specialisations (ageing and home and community).  On completion of the qualification you will be able to enrol in the Disability specialisation  which would complete all three specialisations for the Individual Support qualification.  Contact the Administration Office or comeback to the website for course dates.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work placement as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency. Placement for the full qualification will be arranged by the College.
